Short answer
Most human trials used 250 to 500 mg of purified shilajit a day, often split into two doses, for 8 to 12 weeks. A few studies used 1,000 mg a day, and one used 2,000 mg. Resin, capsules and powder can all deliver this; what matters most is a tested product and an accurately measured dose.
What dose of shilajit did the studies use?
For a quick per-day and per-dose answer for each form, in mg and grams, see our shilajit dosage guide. The doses below are the daily totals given in human trials. Most used a purified, standardised extract in capsules, not raw resin.
| Study | Daily dose | How it was taken | Length | What was measured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biswas 2010 | 200 mg | 100 mg twice a day after meals | 90 days | Sperm count |
| Keller 2019 | 250 or 500 mg | Daily | 8 weeks | Strength and fatigue |
| Pandit 2016 | 500 mg | 250 mg twice a day | 90 days | Testosterone |
| Das 2019 | 250 or 500 mg | 125 or 250 mg twice a day | 14 weeks | Skin blood flow |
| Pingali 2022 | 250 or 500 mg | Daily | 48 weeks | Bone density |
| Yadav 2026 | 500 mg (resin) | 250 mg twice a day | 28 days | Strength and fatigue |
| Neltner 2024 | 500 or 1,000 mg | Daily | 8 weeks | Collagen marker |
| Sadeghi 2020 | 1,000 mg | Two 500 mg capsules a day | 28 days | Fracture healing |
| Sharma 2003 | 2,000 mg | Daily | 45 days | Blood chemistry |
Where trials compared two doses, the higher dose usually did better: 500 mg beat 250 mg for strength (Keller 2019) and for bone density (Pingali 2022). One small 2003 study gave 2,000 mg a day for 45 days without problems, but no trial has shown a benefit from going above 1,000 mg a day (Sharma 2003).
How should I take shilajit?
Based on the trials, a reasonable approach is:
- Start with 250 mg a day for the first week to see how you get on.
- Increase to 500 mg a day if you want, split into two doses of 250 mg, for example morning and evening. This is the dose used in most trials.
- Give it 8 to 12 weeks before judging whether it does anything for you. That’s how long most trials ran.
- Take a break or stop if you notice no difference. There’s no evidence that taking it indefinitely is either helpful or harmful.
Check the safety guide first if you are on any medication, have a health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Which form of shilajit is best?
No study has compared forms directly, so the best choice is the one that gives you a tested product and a dose you can measure.
| Form | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Resin | Closest to the traditional form; least processed | Hard to measure a precise dose; sticky; bitter taste |
| Capsules or tablets | Exact dose; no taste; the form used in most trials | Check what else is in them (fillers, other herbs) |
| Powder | Easy to mix into drinks | Easier to bulk out with cheap fillers; needs accurate scoops |
| Drops | Easy to take | Concentration varies widely between brands |
| Gummies | Pleasant to take | Often a low dose of shilajit plus sugar; rarely tested |
How do I take shilajit resin?
Measure your dose, ideally on scales, and dissolve it in a glass of warm (not boiling) water, tea or milk, stirring until it’s gone. Purified resin dissolves fully; a lot of gritty residue suggests impurities. Some people simply let it dissolve under the tongue, though the taste is strong. Use a clean spoon or the tool supplied, and keep the jar sealed, away from heat and moisture.
Does it matter what time of day I take it?
There’s no evidence that it does. Trials usually gave the dose twice a day without specifying a time, and one gave it after meals (Biswas 2010). If shilajit upsets your stomach, taking it with food is a sensible first step.
What else affects how well shilajit works?
The product matters as much as the dose. Most trials used a purified extract standardised to a set level of fulvic acid, and results from those don’t automatically apply to raw resin or to other brands. The buying guide explains what to look for, and shilajit benefits covers what each dose was found to do.

Frequently asked questions
How much shilajit should I take a day?
Most trials used 250 to 500 mg a day of purified shilajit. Start at the lower end. There is no evidence that taking more than 1,000 mg a day adds any benefit.
How much is a pea-sized piece of shilajit resin?
Sellers often say a pea-sized piece is about 300 to 500 mg, but resin varies in density and moisture, and nobody has tested how accurate this is. If you want to match the trial doses, weigh it on jewellery scales that measure to 0.01 g.
Should I take shilajit in the morning or at night?
No studies have compared times of day. Trials usually split the daily dose into two, given twice a day, and one gave it after meals.
Can I take shilajit with ashwagandha or other supplements?
No trials have tested shilajit combined with ashwagandha or similar herbs, so there's no evidence either way on benefits or interactions. Taking several supplements at once also makes it hard to tell which one causes any effect or side effect.
